Pampore Saffron Fields: Season & Visiting from Srinagar
The purple flowers are seasonal; the work behind them is year-round. A good visit to Pampore respects both the crop and the people growing it.

The quick answer
Plan around the autumn flowering and harvest period, commonly late October into November, but confirm the actual bloom with a grower before setting out. Fields are working farms: entry, photographs and any visit arrangements need permission.
Where are the saffron fields?
Pampore is in Pulwama district, near Srinagar. The district administration identifies the karewa lands of Pampore among Kashmir’s saffron-growing areas. A karewa is part of the raised landscape associated with these fields; the attraction is the cultivation itself rather than a single ticketed garden.
“Take me to the saffron fields” is therefore not a complete pickup instruction. Agree on a specific grower, meeting point and permission before leaving Srinagar. The route and travel time depend on your hotel, the meeting place and traffic, so leave space in the day rather than relying on one fixed journey time.
When do saffron flowers bloom in Kashmir?
The usual trip-planning window is late autumn, often late October into November. Kashmir Life’s November 2013 feature shows the harvest in Pampore, while Kashmir Reader reported a visit during the season in October 2021. These are archive accounts, not a live flowering calendar.
Ask for a current check close to your visit. Weather and the field’s stage of flowering affect what you will see. A photograph taken in a previous year cannot guarantee a carpet of purple on the same date this year. If bloom is the main purpose of your journey, make that explicit before confirming the outing.
What to expect on a respectful farm visit
Keep to the route the grower allows and ask before stepping between the beds. Do not pluck flowers, disturb soil or move baskets to improve a picture. Ask before photographing people, especially when they are working. A friendly conversation does not automatically mean permission to walk throughout the property.
Choose comfortable footwear for the ground and clothing that suits the day’s weather. If travelling with children, explain the working-farm setting before arriving. Let the grower decide whether a demonstration is possible rather than expecting harvesting or processing to be staged on demand.
Five things to confirm before leaving Srinagar
- Bloom: are flowers visible now in the particular field you will visit?
- Permission: who has agreed to host you, and where will you meet?
- Timing: what time suits the grower’s work and your route?
- Cost: is there a guide, farm-visit or demonstration charge, and what does it cover?
- Alternative: what will you do if weather or access changes the plan?
A retail stop, farm visit and processing-centre tour are separate arrangements. Do not assume that a facility mentioned in a news article is open for casual tourist entry today.
How to fit Pampore into a Kashmir itinerary
Discuss the stop while arranging your Srinagar days or a transfer towards the southern valley. A short visit with confirmed permission can be more rewarding than adding several unplanned detours. Keep the airport or railway departure day simple; a time-sensitive transfer is a poor place for an uncertain field visit.
Browse our seven-day Kashmir itinerary, then put Pampore in your trip notes if it interests you. The route may need to change to accommodate it. Farm visits, special guides and purchases are optional extras unless named in the quote.
Taking a little saffron home
Compare labelled packs by weight and ask how their origin is documented. Read our buying checklist before making a large purchase. Afterwards, our saffron cooking guide can help you use it in a cup of milk or a familiar rice dish.
The best reason to visit is to understand the place and its work. Buying something can be part of the visit, but it should remain your choice.
