Kashmiri Kahwa: What It Is & How to Enjoy It
A warm cup, a little conversation and a pause between the sights. Kahwa is a simple way to get to know one of Kashmir’s familiar flavours.

Kahwa, also written kehwa or kahwah, is a traditional Kashmiri green tea. Preparations can include ingredients such as cardamom, saffron and almonds. The recipe and sweetness vary, so it is worth asking what is in the cup you are being offered. District Kupwara’s cultural guide describes kehwa as a green tea served with spices and almonds.
What should you ask when ordering?
Start with the ingredients rather than assuming every place makes it the same way. Ask whether it is sweetened, whether nuts are added and whether you can have it less sweet. If an ingredient is unsuitable for you, explain that before ordering; the appearance of a drink is not a reliable ingredient list.
You do not need to turn a tea break into a tasting checklist. Choose a convenient stop along your day’s route and leave enough time to sit down. For a family, it can be a useful break between walking and the next drive. Order a drink that suits each person instead of expecting everyone to enjoy the same thing.
Make a little space in your Srinagar day
A tea stop can work before an afternoon by the lake or after city sightseeing. Keep it close to the places you are already visiting. A long detour for one cup can take time away from the rest of your plans, especially on a short holiday.
If you would like bread alongside it, ask what is freshly available and how large a serving is. Our Kashmiri bakery guide gives you a few names to recognise. It is a starting point for a conversation with the baker, rather than a promise that every item is available at every shop.
Adding a tea stop to your holiday
Tell us in your trip notes if local food and tea are part of the Kashmir you want to experience. We can discuss whether a stop fits your route. A café visit, tasting or special meal is not automatically part of a hotel meal plan; the final quote should say what is included and what you pay separately.
